Singer-songwriter M.C. Taylor, better known as the brain behind and frontman of Hiss Golden Messenger, has announced his forthcoming album Terms of Surrender and is back with single “I Need a Teacher.”
Due in September via Merge Records, Terms of Surrender sees Taylor writing with his usual introspection, and it’s ever so apparent with “I Need a Teacher.” Taylor longs for guidance in the track, attempting to navigate life’s challenges over the blues-rock tune. Based in rock with nuances of blues, soul and Americana, “I Need A Teacher” is a powerhouse that stands out from Taylor’s normal singer-songwriter ways.
The track is also accompanied by a video from director D.L. Anderson, shot at the statewide North Carolina Association of Educators’ Day of Action demonstration, where teachers and students walked out of classrooms to protests funding cuts to public education. The tour Hiss Golden Messenger has also announced is working in tandem with the Durham Public Schools Foundation to donate $1 from every ticket sold to help support public schools, students, educators and families.
Out Sept. 20, Terms of Surrender is Taylor’s follow-up to his 2018 rarities compilation Virgo Fool and 2017 LP Hallelujah Anyhow, and sees him “touch on a myriad of emotions, inner conflict and questions,” according to a press release. Produced by Taylor and Brad Cook, the album has guest appearances by Jenny Lewis, Josh Kaufman and Aaron Dessner of The National.
