Trump National Golf Course in Bedminster, N.J., has reportedly been employing undocumented immigrants since at least 2010, according to the New York Times. Victorina Morales works as a housekeeper at the resort, where she has “made Donald J. Trump’s bed, cleaned his toilet and dusted his crystal golf trophies,” according to the Times. “When he visited as president, [Morales] was directed to wear a pin in the shape of the American flag adorned with a Secret Service logo.”
Morales said she started working at the resort in 2013, when she applied with phony papers. She had escaped Guatemala in 1999, crossing the southwestern border illegally. In her time at the Bedminster resort, Morales has had up-close interactions with the president and his inner circle, including cleaning while Trump watches television and standing on the sidelines while he interviewed potential cabinet members.
Sandra Diaz also worked at the course while an undocumented immigrant, from 2010-2013. She said that there are “many people without papers” still working at the resort. This directly contradicts statements Trump made during his campaign, when he said that he “didn’t have one illegal immigrant on the job.” Speaking out like this is incredibly brave, given the massive power imbalance between them and the president.
It also broadly contradicts Trump’s xenophobic, fear-mongering rhetoric about illegal immigrants at large. He’s pointedly referred to them as “criminals and rapists,” while his own companies trade in the reality of the situation, which is desperate people looking taking low-paying jobs in order to survive.
“We are tired of the abuse, the insults, the way he talks about us when he knows that we are here helping him make money,” Morales said. “We sweat it out to attend to his every need and have to put up with his humiliation.”
