Homeshake, the Montreal-based indie-pop project of Peter Sagar, has shared “Nothing Could Be Better,” the second single off his forthcoming album Helium, due out Feb. 15, 2019, through Sinderlyn and Royal Mountain Records.
For Sagar and Homeshake, floating is not enough. 2017’s Fresh Air becomes Helium—lightness becomes lighter, and his electro-boogie seems to be ready to float off into the exosphere. “Nothing Could Be Better” has a bit more pep in its step than “lead single “Like Mariah,” but that step never moves beyond a moonwalk-shuffle. It’s a supremely confident step for Sagar—he’s no longer chained to heavy synths and wiggling bass, and is instead free to drift away on his swirl of dreamy pads and patterns, off into the distant upper registers.
“Nothing Could Be Better” feels as elastic and formless as the computer-generated shapes that populate the music video, directed by Steve Smith, who said in a statement he “tried really hard [to capture] the dancing.” It is, after all, dance tune, even if Sagar thinks otherwise—”Sometimes on the way to a social function you gotta ditch and hang out with your sweety instead because love is beautiful,” he said. So maybe it’s a little of both—a little love, a little dance. What could be better? We think the answer is clear.
