New on Netflix: All the Movies and TV Coming in May

Movies Features Netflix
Pin

Are there entirely too many viewing options on Netflix nowadays? Probably, yeah. Are we at Paste going to let it stop us from documenting everything that’s coming to the streaming service next month? Not a chance. Come with us on a journey through Netflix’s May slate, and leave your fears about Netflix consuming our society’s collective consciousness at the door.

We’ll begin with Netflix’s list of incoming feature films, on which the best has been saved for last: Disney-Pixar’s Oscar-winning animated adventure Coco debuts towards the tail-end of the month on May 29. Disney-Pixar describes the film—which won both of the Academy Awards for which it was nominated, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song—as a “vibrant tale of family, fun and adventure” in which a young aspiring musician named Miguel (voiced by Anthony Gonzalez) embarks on an extraordinary journey to the magical land of his ancestors, where he unexpectedly befriends charming trickster Hector (voiced by Golden Globe winner Gael Garcia Bernal), who helps Miguel to uncover the mysteries behind the stories and traditions of his family. Just as impressive as Coco’s sterling 97 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes was its smashing box office success, which made it the highest-grossing film of all time in Mexico, the country in which it is set. As aforementioned, Coco is bringing up the rear as far as May movies go—preceding it earlier in the month are a number of eye-catching titles, including: Oscar-nominated romantic comedy Amelie, Oscar-winning animated favorite Shrek and the Oscar-winning capper on the original Jason Bourne trilogy, The Bourne Ultimatum, on May 1; Netflix original sci-fi thriller Anon on May 4; Oscar-nominated 2017 documentary Faces Places on May 5; Oscar-nominated screen musical The Phantom of the Opera on May 14; Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2013 crime drama Only God Forgives on May 15; endlessly quotable Judd Apatow/Steve Carell comedy The 40-Year-Old Virgin on May 16; Netflix original horror thriller Cargo, starring Martin Freeman as a father struggling to protect his infant daughter during a zombie apocalypse, on May 18; and Netflix original comedy Ibiza, starring Gillian Jacobs as a young woman who falls for a popular DJ during a trip to the titular party paradise, on May 25.

The viewing queue priorities continue to proliferate in the TV and comedy special department, where Netflix has a huge month in store. The extensive list of highlights begins on May 1 with John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous Live at Radio City, the first in a new multi-special deal between the Emmy-winning stand-up and Netflix. The very funny Mulaney recently delivered what Paste deemed the best SNL episode of the season, returning to host the prestigious sketch-comedy show he spent five years writing for. Kid Gorgeous is Mulaney’s second Netflix special, following 2015’s The Comeback Kid, which we numbered among that year’s best comedy specials. Next up on May 4 are the second season of Netflix original series Dear White People, adapted from Justin Simien’s critically acclaimed film of the same name, and a new episode of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman, featuring another beloved SNL alum: Tina Fey. The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale streams on Netflix each Sunday, with another new episode on May 6 and its first season finale on May 13. In between those episodes is Hari Kondabolu’s debut Netflix stand-up special, Warn Your Relatives, streaming on May 8—the incisive and politically minded comic is best known for his TruTV documentary The Problem With Apu, which has started a critical cultural conversation about The Simpsons’ problematic depiction of the South Asian character. Next up on Netflix is season three of Bill Nye Saves the World, which we recently highlighted as one of the best science shows on the service, on May 11, and the second Netflix special from the wildly funny Ali Wong, Hard Knock Wife, on Mother’s Day, May 13. Following on May 22 is Tig Notaro Happy To Be Here, in which Notaro “unleashes her inner prankster in a playful stand-up special packed with funny anecdotes, parenting confessions and more,” according to Netflix. Then, May 27 brings the debut of The Break with Michelle Wolf, a new weekly talk show from the Daily Show and Late Night alumna, in which Wolf “pokes fun at everything and everyone.” Last and far from least is the May 30 debut of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s fourth season—we recently ranked the delightful comedy series among Netflix’s best original shows—and the May 31 addition of another new episode of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman, this one featuring singular radio personality Howard Stern.

We’ll conclude, as we must, with the titles Netflix loses in May—sadly, this month’s departing movies are few, but fantastic. May 1 sees the disappearance of beloved baseball classic Field of Dreams, Martin Scorsese’s mafioso masterpiece GoodFellas, Steven Soderbergh’s stylish and star-studded heist flick Ocean’s Eleven and Kathryn Bigelow’s Best Picture-winning Iraq War thriller The Hurt Locker. Leaving Netflix’s library later in the month are Bong Joon-ho’s acclaimed monster movie The Host (May 7), Adam McKay and Will Ferrell’s winning satirical comedy Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (May 12) and Disney’s Oscar-winning live-action reimagining of The Jungle Book on May 30. Queue these up while you can, gang.
