Academy Award nominee and honorary Oscar winner Spike Lee’s Pass Over is said to capture the poetry, humor and humanity of an urgent and timely play about two young black men talking trash, passing the time and dreaming of the promised land. A provocative take on Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, Pass Over was penned by newcomer Antoinette Nwandu.

Pass Over is a filmed stage production with stage direction by Danya Taymor (niece of visionary filmmaker and broadway director Julie Taymor). The play premiered last summer at Chicago’s celebrated Steppenwolf Theatre and stars John Michael Hill, Julian Parker, Ryan Hallahan and Blake DeLong. Pass Over the film premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.

“Speaking powerfully for African-Americans who feel trapped by design in environments of poverty and violence, it recalls the in-your-face allegory of Do the Right Thing,” wrote John DeFore in his review for THR. “This time, though, the battle between love and hate seems already to have ended.”

Pass Over will be available to stream on Amazon Prime on April 20. See its trailer and poster below.
