While the competitive community for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (informally called Smash 4) continues to thrive, the fervent scene for Super Smash Bros. Melee continues on. It’s hard for many of these players to move on to the more recent iteration, so some modders are taking matters into their own hands by turning Smash 4 into the old game they love. This is 4XM.
Originally titled “Super Smash Bros. Melee HD,” this mod allows players to take advantage of the advanced physics-based techniques that have since been impossible in the newer Smash Bros. games, including wavedashing, L-canceling, dash dancing, jump canceling and even more techniques that probably require a dictionary to understand. Expect classic Smash Bros. characters to have their older movesets from Melee, while Smash 4 newcomers such as Mega Man, Cloud or Ryu can take advantage of the aforementioned techniques for the first time.
Smash players have always preferred the much faster style of Melee, with a similar Brawl mod called Project M having its own big competitive scene before the project was shut down around the release of Smash 4.
