Listen to Jason Isbell's Hauntingly Beautiful New Song "If We Were Vampires"

Music News Jason Isbell

The latest single from Jason Isbell and his band The 400 Unit’s forthcoming album, The Nashville Sound, titled “If We Were Vampires,” features a more subdued sound than the album’s previously released rock ‘n’ roll singles “Hope the High Road” and “Cumberland Gap.”

Treading lightly, Isbell first speaks lovingly of “the fragile heart you’ve protected for so long” before confronting the eventual loss of either himself or his partner at the end of their lives.

“Maybe we’ll get 40 years together, but one day I’ll be gone, or one day you’ll be gone,” Isbell croons as Amanda Shires sings it back to him before the two begin daydreaming about living forever.

It’s a hauntingly beautiful love song that embraces the end of a relationship and life meaningfully lived. Where other artists make impossible promises to follow their loves into the dark or simply live forever, Isbell whispers of the eventual and promises to make the most out of “every second I can find” before the final bell tolls.

Listen to the hauntingly beautiful song below, watch Isbell’s 2010 performance in the Paste office further down and check out Isbell and The 400 Unit’s tour dates here. The Nashville Sound is up for preorder here.
