Entomophobes beware: Lydia Loveless’ surreal video “Same to You,” off of her 2016 album Real, is crawling with insects. While horror is not typically a genre commonly tapped for music videos, this one, which you can watch exclusively on Paste today, works oddly well.
Loveless—who made our list of The 25 Best Live Acts of 2016—is more of a narrator in the video, which chronicles the death of a relationship. Director Brandon Reichard’s style is a little unorthodox. The video begins with an impressive montage of cut-and-paste visuals resembling home videos and quickly takes a turn for the strange when an unsettling doll is introduced. If you’re squeamish, you should probably stay away from this video, as it features at least five different types of creepy critters invading a dollhouse.
“I liked the bizarre stop-motion animation and the fact that it wasn’t just a bunch of dudes standing around. To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of music videos unless they are funny or creepy,” says Loveless. “I didn’t want to do something that was ‘me’ focused, and I didn’t want to entirely come up with the concept. To me, I already wrote the song. I wanted to see what someone else got out of it. And I wanted to add some horror.”
