Bonnaroo’s SuperJam is in many ways a microcosm of what makes the Tennessee music fest so memorable—the performance, a festival tradition, is an unpredictable, genre-defying, super-sized collaboration, a glorious mess that thrives on spontaneity and eclecticism. Anyone who has ever set foot on the farm can attest that Bonnaroo itself lives on that very same wavelength.
Today, festival organizers A.C. Entertainment and Superfly have revealed the artists who will make 2016’s SuperJam magic happen. The performance, titled “Heart, Soul & Spirit: A Tribute to Tennessee,” is just that—a tribute to musical heroes hailing from Bonnaroo’s home state, including everyone from BB King to Justin Timberlake.
Rising saxophone master Kamasi Washington will lead the SuperJam as musical director, while his talented collaborators will include: Miguel, GRiZ, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, Devonté Hynes, Eric Krasno & The Shady Horns, Vulfpeck, The Internet, Chicano Batman and Lizzo. Many more “co-conspirators” will be announced in the coming days, and, as is SuperJam tradition, there is sure to be at least an act or two who show up unannounced.
“I’m so excited and honored to lead this year’s SuperJam,” said Washington. “Such a cool experience to collaborate with all of these amazing artists in celebration of some of the greatest music legends from Tennessee, at one of the coolest festivals in the country—it’s going to be a crazy party!” The SuperJam will take place late Saturday night, running from 12:30 a.m. to 2:30 a.m.
“We’ve been proud to call Tennessee home for the past 15 years and couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate this milestone anniversary than with a SuperJam dedicated to the legendary music from our home state,” said Robin McNicol, Director of Programming for Superfly, the co-creators of Bonnaroo. “We’re excited to have Kamasi Washington leading what is sure to be a night of once-in-a-lifetime performances.”
Along with the standard SuperJam, Bonnaroo has also unveiled the lineup of “the SuperJam’s country cousin,” The Bluegrass Situation. Said Situation will be hosted by Ed Helms and the Watkins Family Hour House Band (including Sara and Sean Watkins), and will feature Lee Ann Womack, Buddy Miller, Amanda Shires, The Secret Sisters, The Wood Brothers, Steep Canyon Rangers, Sam Bush Band and more.
